A suspect in an armed robbery shot himself in the head as police pursued him through a condominium complex.
The man died Friday evening at University Medical Center. His name was not released.
Four other suspects believed to be from the Los Angeles area were arrested in connection with the robbery that led to the pursuit, police said.
Charged with robbery with a deadly weapon and burglary with a deadly weapon were Alfred Wheat, 22; Tyrone Diaz, 25; Kyle Jones, 24; and Linda Lee, 20.
A robbery at the Service Merchandise at the intersection of Twain Avenue and Maryland Parkway was reported to police shortly before 8 p.m. Friday.
A vehicle matching the description of the one used in the robbery was seen entering a condominium complex on Maryland Parkway. A police officer saw people jump from that vehicle into a waiting car, which other officers soon stopped elsewhere in the complex.
Instead of getting into the second car, one of the men fled on foot through the complex. A pursuing officer said he saw the suspect shoot himself in the head and fall to the ground.
