State Fair features entertainment, rides, arts-crafts

With the start of this year's Las Vegas Jaycees State Fair Tuesday, valley residents will have the opportunity to partake in carnival rides, midway games, arts and crafts, commercial exhibits and live music.

"A Fair Under the Stars" will continue through Sunday at Cashman Field, 850 N. Las Vegas Blvd.

Fair hours are from 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 4 p.m. to midnight Friday; noon to midnight Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The cost is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children ages 6 to 12. Children 5 and younger are free.

Entertainment will be provided on two stages. Those in the audience can expect to see a variety of acts including musical groups, dance groups, a magic show and karate demonstration.

Featured entertainment at the fair will include the country music sounds of Marty Stuart, performing at 7 p.m. Wednesday; the Bellamy Brothers, performing at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday; and Mark Chestnut, performing at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday.

Fourteen local contestants will compete Tuesday night for the title of 1998 Jaycees State Fair Queen. The contest will be held on the outdoor stage at 5:30 p.m. The pageant will consist of a swimsuit competition, an evening gown competition and question and answer period.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, in honor of Kids Days, all children between the ages of 5 and 18 will be charged $1 admission.

The Jaycees will hold a Canned Food Drive Thursday. Fairgoers who bring a can of food to the promotions desk at Cashman Field will receive $2 off the admission price.

Sunday is Senior Day and all seniors 55 and older will be admitted for free from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a free pancake breakfast at 11 a.m.
