Teacher back at school after sentencing on drug charge

Volberding was placed on three years probation after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance. He qualified for probation since the charge was a first offense.

Prosecutors said his record would be wiped clean if he completes the terms of his probation, but he would lose his teaching license if he fails to do so.

Lyon County Schools Superintendent Nat Lommori said state law requires the immediate revocation of a teaching certificate when a teacher is convicted of a felony.

But because there's a "no conviction" order on Volberding's record at this time, he's allowed to keep his license during the three-year probation, Lommori said.

Plans call for Volberding to teach woodshop classes. Last year, he taught drafting, woodshop and math classes.

Volberding was arrested in May after sheriff's deputies found drug paraphernalia and marijuana at his home.

Under terms of his probation, he must complete a drug treatment program and submit to random drug testing.
