Degrees -- Several local students recently received degrees from their respective schools:

Kenneth B. Crippen of Las Vegas, California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, Calif., bachelor of science.

Marsha S. Roth of Las Vegas, Illinois State University, Normal, Ill., master of science in education.

Freshman honors -- The following local students entered college with freshman honors from their high school:

Robert J. Johnson of Las Vegas, California Lutheran.

David T. Maupin of Las Vegas, California Lutheran.

Awards -- The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honor middle and high school students across America for outstanding acts of community service.

Awards are granted at the local and state levels, then 10 national honorees will be named at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., next May.

If you know any youngsters in grades 5-12 who deserve recognition for volunteer service, have them contact their school principal, scout leader or county 4-H agent for an application or call 792-9775. The deadline for submitting applications is Oct. 30.

Scouting -- Tickets are on sale for the Scout Expo at Cashman Center Oct. 31. The expo, a demonstration of what scouting is all about, will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature more than 150 booths by Cub Scout Packs, Boy Scout Troops and Explorer Posts. This year's theme is "Fall Festival -- Harvest the Fun!" Tickets are $3.

Fire Safety -- Local children, pre-kindergarten through third grade will have a chance to learn and practice fire safety skills from fire and emergency personnel in October. As part of Fire Prevention Month, more than 5,000 children will visit the Clark County Fire Department Training Center to learn different safety techniques including how to: stop, drop and roll; crawl under smoke; test smoke detectors; and dial 911.
