* Growth a cause
The district has about 200,000 students, up from 122,000 eight years ago.
* Legal budget
The budget for the district's legal department is $1.8 million this year. That includes salaries for the district's six in-house lawyers, expert witnesses, office materials and payments to private law firms.
* Lawsuits vary
About 45 percent of the current 140 outstanding suits are personal-injury cases. Roughly 10 percent are lawsuits brought by school-district employees against their bosses. Another 12 percent involve construction disputes.
