Campaign Notebook: Bill passes with $5.75 million for Nevada environment

Improvements for Nevada's environment totalling $5.75 million were approved as part of the Senate Veterans, Housing and Independent Agencies Appropriations Bill that passed 96-1 Thursday.

"Funds in this bill will allow us to construct new water storage facilities in the Moapa Valley, a new wastewater treatment facility in Sparks and to continue work on a new wastewater pipeline at Lake Tahoe," Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said.

The city of Sparks, located just east of Reno, will receive $2.5 million for the water treatment facility which will be constructed at Helms Pit.

Another $2.5 million will go toward replacing the existing 27-mile wastewater pressure pipeline at Lake Tahoe.

"Water quality is one of the three top areas of concern when it comes to preserving Lake Tahoe," Reid said. "We need to continue to support the replacement of this pipeline."

Video exposes campaign ads

The League of Women Voters of Las Vegas will present a video that informs voters about campaign advertising at its Oct. 17 breakfast meeting.

The video was produced by the organization's Rochester, N.Y., chapter with clips from commercials from around the country during the 1996 elections. The video teaches citizens how to determine the intention and meaning of campaign advertising.

The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Mardi Gras Inn, 3500 Paradise Road. For reservations call 256-3662 or 363-4382.

Veterans to announce endorsement

Veterans in Politics will hold a conference Thursday to announce its endorsements for federal, state and local candidates for the general election.

The candidate for governor that VIP endorses is expected to attend the event.

The meeting will be at noon at the East Flamingo Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.

Candidate appearances

The Paradise Democratic Club will host another of its $5 dinners on Oct. 21 with Congressional candidate Shelley Berkley and lieutenant governor candidate Rose McKinney-James.

The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Days Inn Motel, 707 Fremont St.

The North Las Vegas Democratic Club is hosting a candidates night for all democratic candidates on Oct. 20. The event will be 7 p.m. at the North Las Vegas Lion's Club, 2939 Van De Meer St.
