Clark County business group sponsors cleanups Saturday

Cleanly pressed business suits and outfits will be traded for jeans and T shirts. Brief cases will be left behind in favor of trash bags.
And the result, hopes the Business Watch Network, will be a cleaner, safer, crime-free community.
Business Watch Network is sponsoring a community-wide cleanup Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at 20 locations around the Valley. It's an event that is as much aimed at good business as it is community pride.
The mission of Business Watch is to educate businesses about preventing crime. The group's meetings focus on topics like spotting bad checks and watching for shoplifters. So the cleanup effort isn't just a feel-good volunteer event, it's aimed at reducing crime and promoting business through cleanliness.
Cleaner areas are less likely to be crime infested and make for more attractive places for people to patronize, say organizers.
"The mission of Business Watch Network is to promote public safety to a good economic climate. One of the things that makes a safe community is to have it trash free," said Ruth Joseph, coordinator of the event for Business Watch. "We look at public safety from a broader perspective than just crimes."
Business Watch President Paul Workman agreed.
"Cleanliness promotes law-abiding people," he said. "We want people to be heads-up for their community."
About 400 people representing about 25 businesses had signed up to participate as of Thursday. Prudential Securities, for example, will have 90 workers picking up trash as part of a company-wide day devoted to volunteerism, said Prudential's Steve Kushner.
But Joseph said anyone interested can just show up Saturday. She said Saturday's event will be the first of many annual cleanup days sponsored by Business Watch.
