Henderson developer bridges trail

Developers are finding that building in Henderson means making room for trails and bike paths.

Champion Homes will unveil a bridge over a wash Saturday that will connect its Champion Village home development with the city's trail system.

Champion is just one of many developers that are having to include trails and trail access into their plans for Henderson, said Michael Tassi, a planning analyst for the city.

"About a year ago the voters passed a plan that put a master plan in place for trails and bike paths in Henderson," Tassi said. "Now when a developer comes to Henderson they have to adhere to the master trail map."

Voters approved a $54.6 million bond issue in 1997 to help the city develop bike paths and other recreational facilities.

According to Tassi, 22 miles of bike paths and 10 miles of off-road trails have already been put into use by the city. Tassi said that the city's goal is to have about 160 miles of trails in use in the next five-10 years.

The bridge, at the Champion Homes development near Lake Mead Drive and Gibson Road which cost $18,000, was a joint effort by the developer and the non-profit American Society of Engineers.

"This is an important part of a city," Tassi said. "Trails and paths contribute directly to the health of a city."
