MANITOBA MOOSE 4, ORLANDO SOLAR BEARS 3

ORLANDO--Bill Bowler scored, with an assist from Scott Thomas, on a power play at 9:53 of the third period to give the Manitoba Moose (2-0-0) a 4-3 win over the Orlando Solar Bears (0-2-0) Saturday before an Orlando Arena crowd of 5,345. Bowler also set up Thomas or the first goal of the game, just 17 seconds in. The Moose, aided by a strong debut performance by goalie Christian Bronsard, held on to the 1-0 lead through the first intermission and much of the second period, before Shawn Carter's equalizer at the 15:25 mark. A late penalty call, however, allowed winger Corey Cyrenne to put Manitoba back in control before the end of the period. Orlando's Mark Beaufait tied the score at 7:06 of the third period, but the Moose started to pull away less than two minutes later with Ralph Intranuovo's first tally of the season. The Solar Bears' final score, by veteran winger Dave Mackey, also came with a man advantage, at 12:08. The Solar Bears pounded Bonsard with 34 shots, but the Canadian National Teamer came up with 31 saves. Orlando's Scott Bailey turned away 14 of 18.

DETROIT VIPERS 4, CINCINNATI CYCLONES 1

CINCINNATI--The Detroit Vipers (1-0-0) scored twice in the opening period on their way to a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones (1-1-0) Saturday night before an opening-night crowd of 9,398 at The Crown. Yves Sarault's winning goal came 9:19 into the game. Brian Felsner had given the Vipers a 1-0 lead on a power play at the 1:57 mark. Peter Ciavaglia capitalized on a second-period cross-checking penalty by Cincinnati's Chris Joseph to score the Vipers' third unanswered goal, and Star of the Game Mike Prokopec closed out the scoring at 8:52 of the third. Gilbert Dionne spoiled the Vipers' shutout bid with his first goal of the season, 16:30 into the second period. Winning goaltender Jani Hurme faced 28 shots and made 27 saves. Cincinnati's Geoff Sarjeant stopped 27 of 31 Detroit attempts.

MICHIGAN K-WINGS 2, KANSAS CITY BLADES 1

KALAMAZOO, Mich.--Rookie goaltender Marty Turko stopped 48 of 49 shots to help the Michigan K-Wings (2-0-0) beat the Kansas City Blades (0-2-0) 2-1 Saturday in front of 4,564 at Wings Stadium. Defensemen Brad Lukowich and Matt Martin scored in the first and second periods, respectively, as the K-Wings took a 2-0 lead. Trevor Sherban was the only Blades player to beat Turko, on a power play at 12:44 of the third. Turko, a 1996-97 All-American at the University of Michigan and Second Team CCHA All-Star last season, was drafted by the Dallas Stars after graduation. The loss was a tough one for Blades goalie Patrick Lalime, who finished with 43 saves on 45 Michigan shots.

MILWAUKEE ADMIRALS 4, CLEVELAND LUMBERJACKS 2

MILWAUKEE--The Milwaukee Admirals (1-0-1) picked up their first win of the IHL season Saturday, 4-2 over the Cleveland Lumberjacks (0-1-1) in front of 5,223. Eric Fenton won the game at 18:36 of the first period, with Milwaukee's third power play goal since the opening faceoff. Vitali Yachmenev started the barrage at the 6:56 mark, and Jason Cipolla, who assisted on Fenton's tally, made the score 2-1 at 12:30. The Jacks closed to within a goal with Brent Peterson's goal 17:10 into the second period, but defenseman Jeff Kealty put the game out of reach with the only goal of the third period, at 6:19. Cipolla picked up his third assist of the game on the play. Goalie Tomas Vokoun made 23 saves on 25 chances to record his first win of the season. Corey Schwab snagged 30 of the Admirals' 34 shots in the Cleveland net.

INDIANAPOLIS ICE 3, FORT WAYNE KOMETS 2 (SO)

FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Shootout goals by Barrie Moore and Bob LaChance pushed the Indianapolis Ice (1-0-0) past the Fort Wayne Komets (0-0-1) 3-2 Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 8,203 at Memorial Coliseum. Ice goalie Marc Lamothe, who stopped 31 of 33 shots in regulation, shut the Komets out in the tiebreaker. Fort Wayne led 1-0 at the end of the first period, on David Nemirovsky's goal nine seconds before the intermission. Brian Fogarty made the score 1-1 on a power play at 13:58 of the second, but Fort Wayne's Brian Selsmer scored his first of the season less than a minute later. Winger Brian Noonan sent the game to the shootout with a goal 5:57 into the third period, off LaChance's second assist of the game. Goalie Pokey Reddick suffered the loss, despite matching Lamothe's numbers in regulation.

CHICAGO WOLVES 3, GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS 2

ROSEMONT, Ill.--The Chicago Wolves (1-0-0) held off a two-goal third period rally to defeat the Grand Rapids Griffins (1-1-0) 3-2 Saturday night at the Rosemont Horizon. The defending Turner Cup champions opened their season in front of a team-record crowd of 18,339, despite the fact that the NHL's Blackhawks also were making their 1998-99 home debut at the United Center. The Wolves appeared to have the game well in hand through most of the game. The 1-0 lead created by Mike Featherstone's first-period goal held up until 8:58 of the third, when Steve Maltais added a power play tally to make the score 2-0. The Griffins countered with an extra-man goal of their own, by Glen Metropolit, at 10:40. A goal by Chicago's James Black at 17:05 appeared to be icing on the cake, until another penalty put the Griffins on the power play for the final minutes of the game. Danton Cole cut the Chicago lead to one with :46 to play. Pat Jablonski recorded the win in goal, with 31 saves on 33 Grand Rapids shots. Losing goalie Neil Little also stopped 31, on 34 chances.

LONG BEACH ICE DOGS 4, UTAH GRIZZLIES 2

WEST VALLEY CITY, Ut.--Center Patrik Stefan capped a three-goal run 10:38 into the second period to give the Long Beach Ice Dogs (2-0-0) a 4-2 win over the Utah Grizzlies (0-1-0) Saturday in front of a season-opening crowd of 8,019 at The "E" Center. A costly Ice Dogs bench penalty less than three minutes into the game set the stage for Utah's John Purves to score the first goal of the game. Long Beach's Dan Lambert equalized before the end of the period, and Jason Morgan netted his first of the year 47 seconds into the second. Chris Kenady, assigned to the Grizzlies from the NHL's St. Louis Blues, added a goal at 18:22 to make the score 3-2. Dan Bylsma capped the Long Beach scoring at 2:35 of the third period. The Grizzlies outshot Long Beach 36-30, forcing goalie Manny Legace to make 34 saves to preserve the win. Utah netminder Ryan Bach finished with 26 saves.

HOUSTON AEROS 7, LAS VEGAS THUNDER 3

LAS VEGAS--The Houston Aeros (1-1-0) hammered goalie Scott Langkow with five goals in a 15:34 span of the first period on their way to a 7-3 drubbing of the Las Vegas Thunder (0-1-0) Saturday before 7,924 at the Thomas & Mack Center. Sean Pronger sparked the game-opening barrage with a goal and two assists. Jeff Christian capped the run with the first of his two goals. Brian Wiseman finished with a goal and an assist, and Rob Valisevic and Mark Freer had first-period tallies. Russ Romaniuk paced the Las Vegas attack, with goals at 19:34 of the first period and 2:03 of the second. Winger Dean Ewen also scored, and Patrice Lefebvre recorded two assists. Houston goalie Manny Fernandez held off a 35-shot Las Vegas attack, taking the win with 32 saves. Langkow stopped 11 of 17 shots before being replaced at 7:29 of the second period by Konstantin Simchuk, who finished with 16 saves on 17 chances.
