MANITOBA MOOSE 6, ORLANDO SOLAR BEARS 4

ORLANDO--Scott Thomas and Kent Fearns each had two goals and an assist to lead the Manitoba Moose (1-0-0) to a season-opening 6-4 win over the Orlando Solar Bears (0-1-0) Friday in front of 7,466 at the Orlando Arena. The Moose took control of the game early in the second period, when Jimmy Roy tied the score 39 seconds in, and Thomas made the score 2-1 at 1:43. Fearns notched his first of the season, and Manitoba's third unanswered goal, at 8:51. A run of costly third-period penalties opened the door for the Moose in the third period. Fearns scored on a power play at 8:09, when Curtis Murphy was in the penalty box for holding and the Solar Bears were saddled by a two-minute bench minor. Thirteen seconds later, Ken Sabourin was sent off for slashing, and Thomas put away the game-winner at 8:52. Scott Arneil added an empty-netter in the final minute to cap the win. Orlando's Allan Egeland scored the lone goal of the first period, and Grigori Panteleyev and Mark Beaufat added second-period tallies. Hubie McDonough, who assisted on Beaufait's goal, netted his first of the year at 13:37 of the third. Winning goalie Robb Stauber stopped 21 of 25 Orlando shots, while David Littman snagged 15 of 20 to drop his first of the year for the Solar Bears.

MICHIGAN K-WINGS 4, CLEVELAND LUMBERJACKS 3 (SO)

CLEVELAND--Winger Dave Roberts scored the deciding shootout goal as the Michigan K-Wings (1-0-0) edged the Cleveland Lumberjacks (0-0-1) in both teams' season opener Friday at Gund Arena. Kelly Fairchild, who joined the K-Wings from Milwaukee, and Jon Sim each scored in regulation and the shootout. Defender Brad Lukowich kept the K-Wings alive in regulation, scoring at 19:11 of the final period to tie the score at 3-3. Cleveland's Dave Baseggio broke a scoreless tie on a power play 1:11 into the second period. Goalie Mike Bales, who finished with 35 saves to post his first win, held fast for the remainder of the period, but allowed a pair of third-period tallies by Daymond Langkow and Eduard Pershin. Cleveland netminder Corey Schwab faced 34 shots, and made 31 saves.

GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS 2, KANSAS CITY BLADES 0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Newcomer Robert Petrovicky, who played last season with the AHL's Worcester IceCats, scored both goals as the Grand Rapids Griffins (1-0-0) shut out the Kansas City Blades (0-1-0) 2-0 Friday night at Van Andel Arena. The game drew an opening-night sellout crowd of 10,834. Petrovicky's first goal came on a power play at 7:46 of the first period, and he added an even-strength tally at the 13:14 mark. Blades goaltender Patrick Lalime stopped the Griffins other 27 shots, but the Kansas City offense failed to get past goalie Ian Gordon, who finished with 33 saves. The Griffins' defensive unit chipped in by killling 10 penalties. Grand Rapids winger Maxim Spiradinov picked up his first points as a professional, with assists on both Petrovicky goals.

CINCINNATI CYCLONES 2, MILWAUKEE ADMIRALS 1 (SO)

MILWAUKEE--The Cincinnati Cyclones (1-0-0) scored on three of five shootout chances to defeat the Milwaukee Admirals (1-0-1) 2-1 Friday in front of a season-opening crowd of 6,165 at the Bradley Center. The Cyclones came from behind, forcing the shootout with Jeff Shevalier's power play goal at 9:26 of the third period. Cincinnati goalie Frederick Cassavi helped with a strong debut performance, stopping 34 of 35 Milwaukee shots. The Admirals took a 1-0 lead on Doug Friedman's goal 13:54 into the second period, but managed only one goal in four attempts during the tiebreaker. Tomas Voukon turned away 31 of 32 shots in the Milwaukee goal.

LONG BEACH ICE DOGS 3, HOUSTON AEROS 1

LONG BEACH, Calif.--The Long Beach Ice Dogs, last year's Western Conference regular-season champions opened their 1998-99 campaign on a winning note, downing perennial Southwest Division rivals the Houston Aeros 3-1 Friday in front of 9,962 at the Long Beach Arena. Center Doug Ast scored the deciding goal, 5:45 into the third period. Dan Lambert capitalized on a power play to pad the margin of victory at 11:17. Newcomer Pavel Rosa, sent down from the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, started the Long Beach scoring 12:15 into the game, but a late penalty on Ast paved the way for Cam Stewart's equalizer at 18:08. Goalie Manny Legace, who joined the Ice Dogs from the IHL's Las Vegas Thunder, made 33 saves on 34 chances to post his first win of the season. Houston's Frederic Chabot faced 27 shots, stopping 24.
