Letter: NOW has long urged Tyson ban

Since June 15, the Southern Nevada chapter of the National Organization for Women has been doing just that. We initiated a nationwide campaign of letters to the commission, then to the New Jersey Control Board and, more recently, to Nevada commission's all over again. Tens of thousands of people wrote, faxed and e-mailed their outrage to all these various bodies.

Even before his release from prison, NOW protested Tyson's return to the ring, but to no avail. We wrote letters to the commission, to hotel owners and to prominent members of the community. We held Anti-Violence-Against-Women rallies before every fight in Las Vegas. Over the years we watched as the problems surrounding the Tyson fights steadily deteriorated, culminating in last year's incident during the Holyfield match.

We have fought the good fight. As time passed, more and more people have come to agree with NOW's position. We thank Dinkins for joining our crusade and we urge everyone to write to the Nevada State Athletic Commission and express their outrage.
