Big-name GOP visitors campaign for Chairez

Top House leaders are coming to Las Vegas this week to campaign for GOP congressional candidate Don Chairez.

House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas, plans to attend a fund-raiser for Chairez at noon Tuesday at the home of Lia Roberts.

On Wednesday, Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., expects to be on hand for a Chairez fund-raiser at the Mirage.

Gingrich also will be the guest of honor at a Wednesday event at Harrah's hotel casino, sponsored by the American Gaming Association, for the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee.

This comes as former Republican presidential candidate, Bob Dole, was in Las Vegas over the weekend campaigning for Chairez.

About 150 people were on hand for Dole's appearance Sunday at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Singer.

Chairez has trailed his Democratic opponent, candidate Shelley Berkley, in recent polls.

Dole also spoke to about 500 Republicans at a reception honoring Rep. John Ensign, R-Nev., Saturday night at Idlewild Park in Reno. Ensign is running against Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev.
