Birdies for Charity marks its third year with LVI

Fund-raising for local charities serves as one of the primary goals that the Las Vegas Founders' Club sets each year for the Las Vegas Invitational.

In that spirit, the Founders' Club has announced that it will be welcoming the Birdies for Charity program to the LVI. Birdies for Charity is a national program that benefits non-profit organizations in PGA Tour cities.

The 1998 LVI will mark the third consecutive year in which the event has partnered with Birdies for Charity.

The program has set the ambitious goal of raising $100,000 for local charities in 1998. The current drive, which kicked off officially in August, is raising money by selling incentive-laden tickets. With the purchase of each $10 ticket, fans will be entered in a drawing to win two great prizes.

First, fans may guess the total number of birdies the professional golfers will record during the entire LVI. The winner will walk away with a trip for two to Disney World in Orlando, Fla. As an added benefit, tickets purchased prior to the start of the tournament on Oct. 14 may be redeemed for one free daily admission ticket to the event.

Birdies for Charity will continue selling tickets at the TPC at Summerlin during the LVI. Fans purchasing tickets at that time will be included in the final drawing for another prize: a trip for two to the 1999 British Open.

Several of the organizations benefitting from the program this year include Shade Tree, SafeNest, Habitat for Humanity, Christmas in April, the Ronald McDonald House, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Southern Nevada Inner-City Youth Golf Association.

The Clark County Public Education Foundation, a beneficiary and administrator of Birdies for Charity, was established in 1991 as an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of public education.

"Birdies for Charity has been a successful program at golf tournaments across the country," Bryan Waters said. Waters is senior vice president and Nevada division manager of Wells Fargo, the official sponsor of the program.

"With the endorsement of the LVI and the partnership with the Clark County Public Education Foundation, Birdies for Charity will raise much-needed funds for several worthy non-profit organizations in Southern Nevada."
