Brief: Arizonans support lottery, oppose ban on casinos

A new Arizona Republic poll shows a solid majority of voters -- 60 percent -- aren't ready to bury Windfall Willy, the Lottery's plucky prospector, or any other state-sponsored game of chance.

Voters will decide Nov. 3 whether to extend of the life of the Arizona Lottery to July 1, 2003.

Only 22 percent of the respondents in "The Republic" survey said they're ready to let the Lottery die.

And when asked whether they thought casino gambling should be banned in Arizona, 55 percent said no, compared to 37 percent yes. The remainder were undecided.

Most respondents, 60 percent, said they do not think casino gambling should be extended statewide, beyond Indian reservations. Thirty-three percent said it should, and 7 percent had no opinion.
