Letter: Dying to help Social Security

This was done to stop his Social Security checks from being delivered to him. The agent told us if he had died Sept. 1, this check would not have to be returned. The checks are for the previous month. So every person drawing Social Security, whether he or she dies the first or last day or the month, the check that comes the following month has to be returned.

As of Sept. 4, I commenced to keep a tab of all the people in our area who were 65 years of age or older that died. There were 294. I took a random figure of $700 and multiplied it by 294. The total amount came to $205,800.

This was returned to the Social Security administration. Give thought to the amount that is returned monthly throughout the United States. As those of us on Social Security die, we're helping keep the system solvent for the baby boomers.
