Seniors, disabled get special Henderson bus route

The Regional Transportation Commission approved a new bus route Thursday to accommodate senior citizens and disabled residents in the Henderson-Green Valley area.

The Citizens Area Transit Community Access Route (CATCAR) will run on an hourly schedule Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new service will begin Oct. 22.

Three buses will handle the route, which will run from the Van Wagenen Road area in Henderson to Horizon Ridge in Green Valley.

Kurt Weinrich, executive director of the RTC, said he anticipates about seven people will take advantage of the service each hour, which adds up to about 100,000 passengers a year.

Weinrich said 60 percent of the elderly passengers are taking the bus to the grocery store or to a medical center.

"This will run to and from the senior center, through the senior community and to shopping and hospitals," said commissioner David Woods.

One person opposed the new route, saying CAT should concentrate on the Blue Diamond and Indian Springs area, where people pay for the service through taxation but do not have a bus route. Commissioners said the special route for senior citizens was a different program.
