DETROIT VIPERS 4, CLEVELAND LUMBERJACKS 2

CLEVELAND--Defenseman Keith Aldridge scored twice in 26 seconds of the second period to lead the Detroit Vipers (2-0-0) past the Cleveland Lumberjacks (0-2-1) 4-2 Friday night. A crowd of 9,290 was on hand at Gund Arena. Aldridge's goals brought the Northeast Division leaders back from a 1-0 deficit. Andy Bezeau's game-winner, off Brian Felsners' second assist of the game, came at 8:05, and Steve Walker put the insurance tally into an empty net with 27 seconds left in the game. Jason Ruff got the winless Jacks off to an encouraging start, becoming the first player of the season to beat Detroit's penalty-killing unit, anchored by goalie Jani Hurme. The goal came 13:40 into the game. Jock Callander's third-period tally gave him his 1,300th IHL point, second only to the 1,382 scored by Len Thornson, who finished his career with Fort Wayne in 1968-69. Hurme stopped 18 of the Jacks' 20 shots to post his second win. Corey Schwab faced 26 for the Jacks, and made 23 saves.

CINCINNATI CYCLONES 7, FORT WAYNE KOMETS 5

CINCINNATI--The Cincinnati Cyclones (2-1-0) scored five unanswered goals, three of them by Chris Joseph, on their way to a 7-5 win over the Fort Wayne Komets (0-1-1) Friday before 4,280 at The Crown. Joseph's was the first hat trick by a defenseman in Cyclones history. Doug MacDonald won the game with his first goal of the season, 15:23 into the second period. The Cyclones surged ahead in the first period with power play goals by Todd Simon at 3:52 and Joseph at 3:10 and 17:56. The Komets' defense went on to kill four more penalties, but the damage was already done. Gilbert Dionne, who also recorded a pair of assists for Cincinnati, opened the second period scoring, and Joseph completed his hat trick at the 13:11 mark. A roughing penalty to Cyclones center Don Biggs opened the door for the Komet's first goal, scored by Viacheslav Butsayev at 14:06 of the second stanza. Butsayev netted his second of the game barely three minutes later. The Komets dominated the third period, outshooting Cincinnati 17-11 and picking up power play goals from David Nemirovsky, Brad Purdie and Tero Lehtera. Goalie Frederic Cassavi helped the Cyclones' cause with 42 saves, on 47 Fort Wayne shots. Komets starter Pokey Reddick stopped 15 of 21 over the first two periods. Substitute Bruce Racine made 10 saves.

INDIANAPOLIS ICE 6, GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS 5 (SO)

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--Brian Noonan and Barrie Moore both scored in regulation and the shootout to help the Indianapolis Ice (2-0-0) defeat the Grand Rapids Griffins (1-1-1) 6-5 Friday before 9,052 at Van Andel Arena. Ice goalie Marc Lamothe, who stopped 34 of 39 shots in regulation, held the Griffins scoreless on four shootout attempts to preserve the win. Chris Herperger paced the Indianapolis attack with goals in the first and third periods. David Hymovitz added a goal and an assist. The Griffins came from behind three times to force the tiebreaker. Maxim Spiridonov's first goal as a professional tied the score at 1-1 at 7:55 of the first period. Glen Metropolit scored before the intermission to create a 3-3 deadlock, and Danton Cole came through on a extra-man situation with three seconds left in the game to leave the score at 5-5. Current IHL Goaltender of the Week Ian Gordon started for the Griffins, facing 18 shots and making 14 saves over two periods before being replaced by Neil Little, who stopped eight of nine.

LONG BEACH ICE DOGS 6, MANITOBA MOOSE 2

WINNIPEG--Patrik Augusta led the way with a hat trick as the Long Beach Ice Dogs (4-0-0) beat the Manitoba Moose (2-1-0) 6-2 Friday night. The Western Conference division leaders met in front of 8,500 at Winnipeg Arena. The teams played even through the first period. Augusta scored on a power play at 4:19 and assisted on a goal by Doug Ast to put the Ice Dogs up 2-0. The Moose equalized within a 1:22 span off tallies by Bill Bowler and Patrice Tardif. Augusta's second power-play tally of the game, at 2:43 of the second period, was the game-winner, and started a four-goal Long Beach run that also included tallies by Mike Matteucci and Dan Lambert. Manny Legace posted the win in goal, with 20 saves on 22 Manitoba shots. Rob Stauber stopped 17 of 23 for the Moose.

MILWAUKEE ADMIRALS 3, MICHIGAN K-WINGS 2

MILWAUKEE--Vitali Yachmenev scored on a power play at 9:17 of the third period to push the Milwaukee Admirals (2-0-1) past the Michigan K-Wings (2-1-0) 3-2 Friday at the Bradley Center. The game-winner was Yachmenev's second of the game. Center Jason Cipolla, who assisted on the deciding tally, has a goal and four assists in his first three games of the year. The Admirals seized the momentum early, taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Doug Friedman in the first period and Yachmenev in the second. The K-Wings, who were undefeated coming into Friday's contest, rallied late in the period, tying the score with goals by Dave Roberts at 13:44 and Marty Flichel at 15:51. Eric Fichaud posted the win in goal by saving 32 of 34 shots faced. Michigan's Marty Turco stopped 30 of 33.

HOUSTON AEROS 7, KANSAS CITY BLADES 3

KANSAS CITY--Cam Stewart recorded his second hat trick in as many games as the Houston Aeros (3-1-0) defeated the Kansas City Blades (1-3-0) Friday before an opening night crowd of 8,108 at Kemper Arena. Stewart's second goal, 12 minutes into the second period, snapped a 2-2 tie and set off a four-goal flurry that put the game out of the Blades' reach. Houston's final three goals, by Brian Wiseman, Sean Pronger and Stewart, came on power plays, as did Jeff Tory's first-period tally. Stewart leads the IHL in scoring with 7 goals and 2 assists. Wiseman, Pronger and Tory also are among the league's top five scorers. The Blades caught Houston goalie Frederic Chabot off guard 25 seconds into the game, with a goal by Jean-Guy Trudel. Ryan Mulhern scored with 2:48 left in the period to tie the score 2-2, and David Ling added a power play tally in the second period. Chabot made 25 saves, off 28 shots, in the winning effort. Kansas City netminder Patrick Lalime stopped 24 of 31.
