Columnist Peter Benton: Las Vegas Invitational another huge success

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

Beautiful weather, scintillating golf and yet another exciting finish capped the 16th Las Vegas Invitational.

So much already has been written about this hugely successful tournament that it seems almost superfluous to write more.

But Jim Cook and Charlie Baron, the tournament manager and tournament coordinator, respectively, along with their staff are to be complimented for another well-run tournament. They are consummate professionals and we have come to expect nothing but the very best from them.

Then there is the dedication and hour upon hour of hard work put in by the LVI committee, headed by chairman Chris Byrd. These men have a thousand and one things to attend to, and every piece of the gigantic jigsaw that goes into running an event of this magnitude is their responsibility.

How about the hundreds of volunteers, who gave so willingly of their time; the host professionals and their crews; and scores of other dedicated folks whom we never see, but whose work also is instrumental in making this annual event so special and successful.

Last but not least are the amateurs who compete and make the whole wondrous week possible. A total of 432 of these generous souls paid their to play with some of the world's best golfers, and, let's face it, without the amateurs we could kiss this tournament goodbye.

We have a definite winner here. To everyone who was involved, thanks a million.
