Southern Nevadans will ‘Make a Difference’

Several Nevada organizations are taking part in national Make A Difference Day Saturday.

-- The Young Lawyer's Section of the State Bar of Nevada and the Clark County and Washoe County bar associations are working with Mobile Assistance and Shelter for the Homeless (M.A.S.H.) Village to seek donated business suits to provide for needy job hunters.

This "law suits day" will be held in the Meadows Mall on the lower level next to Dillard's from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. For information, call 388-8600.

-- The for-profit Nevada Affordable Housing Corp. and the non-profit Angels in the Community will renovate the home of a 101-year-old North Las Vegas woman.

Lillian Waitman, born April 26, 1897, moved to Las Vegas in the 1940s. She lives in a home with her daughter, Mary Kindell.

Her residence, which has no heat or air conditioning, is in need of substantial repairs.

The home will receive a new roof in addition to other basic renovations.

The two organizations need donations of roofing materials, paint and supplies, water heater, electrical supplies, plywood sheathing and weatherizing insulation.

-- The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is looking for volunteers for two "Make a Difference Day clean-ups Saturday.

Volunteers are needed to participate in an ecology dive and beach cleanup at Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave, and to rehabilitate abandoned roads in the Newberry Mountains area.

The Ecology Drive and Environmental Cleanup at Cottonwood Cove will begin at 9 a.m. (Only certified divers may volunteer for the dive.) Refreshments, including a beach barbecue for volunteers, will be provided.

Volunteers for the Newberry Mountains Project will work with members from the local group of the Sierra Club and the National Park Service Staff. Individuals and organizations wishing to participate should pre-register by calling the Cottonwood Cove Marina at 297-1464 or Nancy Hendricks, National Park Service coordinator at 293-8949.

-- The Students of James Madison Ullom Elementary School are holding a read-a-thon Saturday.

The eight hour read-a-thon will raise money, canned food and children's winter clothing for the homeless of MASH Village and The Shade Tree.

Those interested in donating can bring their donations to the multi-purpose room at James Madison Ullom Elementary, 4869 Sun Valley Drive, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. that day.

-- The Southern Nevada Displaced Homemaker Program will take donations of canned food, bus tokens, business clothing, toys and cash at the San Remo hotel-casino from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. Saturday. There will be live music and and an appearance from characters from the Las Vegas Hilton's Star Trek attraction.

-- The Salvation Army will hold a food drive in front of the Smith's Food & Drug Center at 2211 North Rampart in Summerlin. Michele Berk, Mrs. United States 1998-99, will be at the event that lasts from 8-4 p.m. on Saturday.
