Woodbury makes sure commission’s ‘good news’ isn’t ignored

County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury spent 10 minutes Tuesday turning negative publicity for the county into positive news during the commission's "good news" portion of their meeting.

"This is the good news side of bad news," Woodbury said.

The Republican commissioner blasted recent television advertisements funded by Las Vegas Sands Inc. Chairman Sheldon Adelson and his group, "Committee for Fairness."

The ads blast Democratic county commissioners Erin Kenny and Myrna Williams. Kenny is portrayed as a reckless spender and Williams as immune to the rising crime rate in her district.

Clark County officials say the grainy black and white commercials also accuse the county of being mired in debt and woefully behind on solving traffic, crime and other growth-related problems.

"Truth is, the budget is healthy and the local crime rate is down," Woodbury told a small crowd in the commission chambers. There was a wider audience, however, as commission meetings are broadcast live on Channel 4 and replayed several times.

He said the county may never catch up with growth, but with projects like the Las Vegas Beltway and the revamping of the Spaghetti Bowl, county officials are making a genuine effort.

"I would like to thank my fellow county commissioners for trying to make a difference in the lives of community members," Woodbury said.
