Berkley, Chairez debate planned for Wednesday

The candidates for Congressional District 1, University Regent Shelley Berkley and former District Judge Don Chairez, will debate each other Wednesday afternoon in the Auditorium of the Classroom Building at UNLV.

The format of the 1:30 p.m. debate includes an initial 5- to 7-minute speech by the candidates, followed by questions from a moderator and a chance for the audience to question the candidates.

LV1 debates ballot questions

Las Vegas 1, the area's only 24-hour local news station, will continue its series of debates on noteworthy ballot questions on Monday night, when the question on the medical use of marijuana is debated.

Advocate Chris Reynolds will argue for the ballot question, while Dr. Heather Allen, an oncologist, will argue against the using the drug for medicinal purposes.

On Thursday, the debate will focus on the school bond question. School District Superintendent Dr. Brian Cram will support the measure, and Glenn Nelson, the educational chair for Nevada Concerned Citizens, will oppose the issue.

The debates will air live during the last half of the 9 p.m. newscast, and will be repeated throughout the night.

Dole spot to support Ensign

A two-minute address from Senator Bob Dole voicing support for Senate candidate John Ensign, R-Nev., will air on Thursday and Friday of next week on NBC affiliates in Las Vegas, Reno and Elko.

In the ad, Dole praises Ensign for cutting taxes, protecting Social Security and expand mammogram coverage for women.

Dole will also comment on what he says is a need for a small state like Nevada to have a Republican in the Senate.

"As one who has been the minority leader in the Senate and the majority leader in the Senate, I can tell you that the majority is the place to be," Dole said. "Nevada deserves to have a senator in the majority."

In an earlier television spot supporting Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., Gov. Bob Miller lent his support to Reid, saying that Nevada needed an experienced senior senator in Washington, D.C.
