Brief: Starwood gets Jersey license

Starwood Chairman Barry Sternlicht said the company plans a $250 million conversion of its Shops on Ocean One pier into a complex offering gambling, hotel rooms, upscale retail and dining facilities and entertainment.

But he told regulators the project was "on the front burner with about 12 other really important projects."

Sternlicht said he wants the pier's retail developer to pay for most of the conversion and hopes it opens before Mirage Resorts and Boyd Gaming debut their proposed Marina District casino complex in 2002.
