Green Valley brings home sate girls golf championship, individual crown

With a third-straight 4A state title all but guaranteed after the first round of play, the Green Valley girls golfers set their sights on the individual state championship on Thursday.

And after three different Gators took a run at the trophy, Green Valley junior Emily De'Ath ultimately took it home, shooting a two-day total of 149 at Sparks' Red Hawk Golf Club.

"The greens were fast up there," Gators coach Del Sagers said. "She had a great short game, and that made a big difference."

Not far behind De'Ath were teammates Kimberly Kindig, who took second with a 151, and Ashlei Pendleton, last year's state champion, who wound up third with a 152.

With that low-scoring trio leading the way, the Gators claimed this year's team title by a whopping 129 strokes over second-place Durango. Bishop Gorman wound up third, 147 shots back.

Green Valley shot a state-record 759 as a squad, with five golfers shooting in the 70s Thursday on the par-72 course. The victors' second-day total of 374 also sets a Nevada record for an 18-hole course.

"To win it the way we did was phenomenal," Sagers said.

De'Ath, who tied for sixth at last year's state tournament, headed into the day tied atop the leaderboard with freshman teammate Christine Fernandez with identical 74s. On day two, De'Ath's 75 was three strokes off the pace set by Kindig and Pendleton, but was enough for the victory.

Bonanza's Jordan Auten posted the best non-Gator finish, placing fourth with a 153. Durango's Laura DeLucia, last week's Southern Zone champion, was fifth with a 154.

Green Valley's sister duo of Christine and Mary Fernandez wound up tied for sixth (155), while the sixth Gator -- senior Jamie Chanin -- was 15th in the field of 60 with a 163.

First-day tennis

Green Valley's boys rolled past Carson, 22.5-0, in day one 4A state tennis action at Reno's Plumas Tennis Complex.

Despite playing without top singles player Chasen Cohen -- who sat out with an ankle injury -- the Gators took a 7.5-0 lead after the first cycle and never looked back.

Green Valley will face Reno, which knocked off Bishop Gorman 14-8.5, in today's championship. The Huskies were led by Manuel Lastra, who posted three singles victories.

Gorman got three doubles wins from the duo of David DiMartino and Sean Margulis in the losing cause.

On the girls side, today's championship will have a familiar look, with local rivals Green Valley and Bishop Gorman slated to meet for the second time in a week.

The Gaels downed McQueen 18.5-4 behind three singles wins from freshman Lauren Martinez and doubles sweeps by all three Gorman pairs.

Likewise, the Gators had little trouble with Reno, defeating the Huskies 17-5.5 on the strength of a singles sweep from Antonella Realo and seven victories in eight doubles matches.

Last week, Gorman outlasted Green Valley 13.5 for the Southern Zone team title. The Gaels also defeated the Gators in last year's state tournament.
