LV Fire Department, kindergarten class spread goodwill

Today seems is a day of goodwill for the Las Vegas Fire Department, with firefighters helping kindergarten children donate gifts to young burn victims and a Texas company donating a railroad tanker car to the department for training purposes.

Las Vegas Firefighters were to deliver today at 1 p.m. get well cards and gifts from 80 kindergarten students at Mountain View Christian Preschool and Child Care Center to children confined to the Burn Unit at University Medical Center.

Firefighters Mark A. Rivero and Craig L. Cottrell developed this and other projects aimed at boosting the moral of the young burn victims.

The gifts and cards are being picked up by firefighters and will be delivered via fire engine.

And Oxychem Co. of Dallas one railroad tank car to the city fire department and another to the county.

A department spokesman said the cars, once used to carry chlorine, will be useful for "hands-on training on how to handle a number of emergencies they might encounter at an actual incident."

Union Pacific Railroad is donating the materials and labor to place railroad tracks at each of the departments' training centers for the cars to rest on.
