Pet adoption drive will save some loving, homeless animals

Their days, literally, are numbered.

But this weekend could turn that ugly reality around for more than 100 homeless dogs and cats who will be taking a special trip to the park in hopes of finding families willing to adopt them.

The huge pet adoption drive is slated for Sunday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at West Flamingo Park off Flamingo Road between Jones Boulevard and Torrey Pines Drive.

Media Partners for Pets is organizing the event, the fourth of its kind since the group of local media representatives banded together a year ago to find an alternative to euthanizing shelter animals. The members take their cause a step further, taking the animals away from the often depressing shelter environment to show the animals off in a cheerful, festive atmosphere.

It's a smart move for someone looking for a four-legged friend or two: The dogs and cats can be adopted for as little as $13 -- a price that covers their spaying or neutering, vaccinations and micro-chip identification tags.

Veterinary Centers of America is sponsoring the event and will have doctors on hand to answer questions, provide microchips and vaccinate the public's pets at low cost.

Clark County and North Las Vegas animal control officers will be chauffeuring the shelter pets to the park and helping to find them homes.

Metro Police's K-9 unit will be demonstrating its crime-fighting dogs at 11 a.m., followed by Stacy Moore's "Mess of Mutts" show. Dog trainer Fred Hassen and his "Amazing Pit Bull, Maddy" will also be appearing.

The public is invited to bring their pets to the event and compete in the pet talent contest at 1 p.m. and a pet costume contest at 3 p.m. Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge Nancy Saitta, County Commissioner Erin Kenny and "Count Cool Rider" will be judging.
