Brief: Layoffs hit Northern Nevada miners

That amounts to about 5 percent of the company's 3,000 workers in the state. Newmont Gold, based in Denver, employs 6,500 worldwide.
One-hundred of the layoffs are in the Carlin Trend with 50 more at the Lone Tree and Twin Creeks mines. Another 20 people are being transferred to Newmont's operations in Indonesia, the company said.
Workers are getting a 60-day severance package that includes salary and benefits through the end of the year, a Newmont spokeswoman said.
