Editorial: Sun endorsements in education races

That's why it's important to elect qualified people to the School Board, state Board of Education and the University Board of Regents. They will guide the policies to improve the quality of education at all levels in the state.

School Board

Larry Mason is running unopposed in District D. He has served the students and families of this community well as a board member.

In District F, incumbent Susan Brager faces Jack Levin. Brager has done a good job and should be re-elected. She believes elementary schools, without taking away from the secondary schools, should be given every tool they need to teach the basics. By second grade, schools need to identify students who can't read and provide extra help. She wants to encourage teachers to stay at least three years in their current schools to cut down on turnover.

In District G, Patrick Boylan faces Sheila Moulton. Voters would be served well by both candidates. Boylan is a computer instructor at the Community College of Southern Nevada. His priorities are accountability and safety. And, he says, "I'll ask questions."

Moulton supports encouraging our best educators to take on challenges in at-risk schools. Her priorities are discipline in the classroom, relevant courses and a strong curriculum.

The Sun recommends both Boylan and Moulton to the voters.

State Board of Education

Jan Biggerstaff is running unopposed in the Subdistrict C race for State Board of Education. She has served the voters well.

In Subdistrict E, Priscilla Rocha faces Islena Giron. Rocha is a bilingual teacher whose priority is parental involvement and holding parents accountable. She has proposed parenting training and workshops at Hewetson Elementary, where she works. Every Wednesday evening she invites parents to class to discuss what their children are learning. She believes the state board needs to be a more cohesive body that has a good working relationship with local school districts.

The Sun endorses Priscilla Rocha.

In Subdistrict B, incumbent Gary Waters faces Pamela Kroeber. Waters is well-spoken and has served the voters well. He has a master's degree in social work and has worked in public mental health as well as in the state Department of Education. He believes schools need to invest heavily in grades K through 3.
