Letter: Self-serving politicians in way of things getting done properly

Unfortunately, many young Americans treat patriotism as old-fashioned and out of vogue. That is sad and a real shame, but in a way I can understand their thinking.

When you see the despicable way veterans are treated in America one can begin to understand why so many young people have little interest in serving in our armed forces.

I am only one of many veterans who have been stonewalled and refused treatment, even for service-connected problems.

We can't blame the VA as their hands are tied by the laws. These laws were passed by our greedy, self-serving politicians. The majority of people in Congress never wore the uniform, and their only interest is their self-interest. They give themselves ill-deserved $40,000 raises and perks most average Americans can only dream about.

Then to add insult to injury, even the crooks like the Jim Wrights and Dan Rostenkowskis reward themselves with outlandish retirements.

To further compound that crime, you have the great pork barrel wasters like Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who threw away billions in schemes designed as ego trips to solidify their incumbency.

None of this destructive and treasonable conduct will change unless we have another "tea party," but on a national basis.

We did not turn our backs on our country, and our country did not turn its back on us, but the pandering politicians sure did.

For this veteran's part, I would not give you a bucket of spit for 90 percent of the people in Congress.
