Town Board OKs zone change for hotel-casino

The 30-acre property stretches between U.S. 395 and Waterloo Lane and is currently used as pasture. It is directly south of an AM-PM Market and Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant now under construction.

Developers hope to change the zoning from agricultural to tourist and general commercial use in order to build a 100-room hotel-casino, a 70-space RV park, a 36-lane bowling alley, and offices.

The proposal includes a portion of the planned bypass from Highway 395 to Highway 88 and dedication of three acres to the county for a youth skate park.

"If the Pinon Plaza in Carson City is a meat and potatoes casino, this one will be steak and lobster," said real estate broker Patty Clark.

Minden engineer George Thiel said the project would capture tax dollars spent by many visitors who come to the area for Carson Valley events but must stay in Carson City. He said the town's urban boundary includes the property.

"We see it as a part of the orderly expansion of the existing downtown corridor," Thiel said.

The project must be approved by the Douglas County Planning Commission.
