School Board to vote this week on tougher graduation standards

District trustees will vote Tuesday on a proposal to evaluate the district's curriculum and new state education standards to determine if students should know more by the time they finish high school.

An advisory group called the K-16 Council will consider whether students should have additional skills by the time they graduate.

The council is made up of representatives from the business community, the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College.

"This is an attempt to bring everyone into the important role of defining our expectations for our graduates," said Trustee Anne Loring.

New state standards go into effect next fall. Washoe County school officials propose that any additional district requirements be implemented at the same time.
