Supreme Court rules on good-time credits for convicts

Nevada law allows a court to recommend inmates lose their good-time credits for filing frivolous court actions. The law was designed to cut down on lawsuits by inmates who in the past have even challenged the lack of chunky peanut butter in a prison canteen.

The good-time ruling by the high court dealt with an appeal by Nolan Klein of Carson City, serving consecutive sentences for robbery with a deadly weapon and rape.

A district court in Reno rejected Klein's appeal, but the Supreme Court said the lower court erred in recommending forfeiture of good-time credits Klein had earned in prison over the past few years.

Prison spokesman Glen Whorton said the ruling means Klein will get back the 10 days per month he has earned in credits toward reducing his total sentence.
