Arraignment postponed for LAPD chief's daughter

Michelle Parks, 37, who also works for the Los Angeles Police Department, was ordered to return to court on Sept. 29, said Barbara Schell of the Clark County District Attorney's office.

Justice of the Peace Nancy Oesterle told her to obtain an attorney by her next court appearance.

Ms. Parks was allegedly the driver of a car involved in a drug deal in June, authorities said. She was charged in a Sept. 3 warrant with one count of conspiracy to sell cocaine and one count of trafficking.

"She is part of an ongoing investigation by our narcotics unit," Las Vegas Metro police Officer Steve Meriweather said. "At some point there was enough information developed to submit a case to the district attorney's office, and the district attorney filed for a warrant."

LAPD Officer Eduardo Funes said Monday there would be no comment from the chief.

"It's a private matter. We aren't going to make any comment," Funes said.

There is an LAPD probe, however, because Ms. Parks is a civilian employee for the department.

Cmdr. David Kalish said Ms. Parks was on medical leave from her job as a clerk typist at one of the LAPD divisions - although he wouldn't specify which one. The nature of the medical leave wasn't disclosed. She has worked for the department for 18 months.

"The department won't comment on other agencies' investigations. However, the department will conduct an internal administrative investigation and that investigation is ongoing," Kalish said.
