Gafforini wins LVMS final

Scott Gafforini escaped a mad dash by Kurt Busch and track champion Mike Ray to win the final regular-season Late Model Sportsman event of the year in NASCAR Winston Racing Series stock car action Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The win was Gafforini's third of the year. He started on the outside of the second row and took the lead on the third lap en route to victory in the 30-lap race. Ray, who had come into the evening with 14 wins, concluded a standout season with his third-place finish. He captured 11 of his last 14 races, losing only to Gafforini during the stretch. "They were running very good in front of me," Ray said of Gafforini and Busch. "We were off just a little with our shock combination, but these guys were running so hard." Gafforini and Ray both drove 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlos, while Busch piloted a Ford Taurus normally driven by Jerry Spilsbury. Randy Swalwell turned what looked to be a disastrous night into his fifth win of the year in the Grand American Modifieds. He blew an engine during practice, sent his crew to pick up a backup engine, then held off Danny Mitchell in the main event.
