Reno Gazette-Journal calls for Clinton's resignation

In its Sunday editions, the newspaper said Clinton forfeited his right to office by lying to Americans and allegedly obstructing justice in the case involving former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

"He has destroyed his ability to lead at a time when international problems are beating insistently against this nation's shores," the newspaper wrote.

"This country cannot afford another 16 months with a president who has lost the respect of even those who voted him into office and the members of his own party in Congress."

At the same time, the newspaper called for the swift repeal of the law that allowed independent counsel Kenneth Starr to delve into Clinton's affair with Ms. Lewinsky.

"The independent counsel law was a mistake, a nightmare that has allowed unfettered prosecutors to conduct never-ending investigations that have little to do with illegality and everything to do with politics," the editorial says.

"Clinton is no hero certainly, but neither are Starr, Lewinsky, Linda Tripp or anyone else involved in the matter. It has been ugly, embarrassing and, most important, unnecessary."
