Ensign ad causes confusion

Ensign not endorsed by Big Brothers

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada wants to make it clear that the organization does not support political candidates.

The agency received calls from people concerned that a commercial featuring Rep. John Ensign, R-Nev., in his role as a Big Brother was a sign of the agency's support for the Republican candidate for Democrat Harry Reid's Senate seat.

In a press release from Willi Baer, president and CEO of Big Brothers, the agency stated that it is not politically motivated and has never endorsed any political candidates for elected office.

The agency acknowledged that Ensign has been an active Big Brother for a year, and that Ensign came to the agency as a private citizen, not as an elected official.

Hispanics in Politics

Hispanics in Politics is hosting a Candidates Night at the UNLV Moyer Student Union on Thursday.

All candidates will be given a chance to speak, so that the HIP can choose which candidates it will endorse on Sept. 24. The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is free to the public and will be covered by Hispanic media outlets.

Jones attacks crime in latest ads

Gubernatorial candidate and Las Vegas Mayor Jan Laverty Jones has began airing a new television commercial in Northern Nevada that highlights her record on crime.

The advertisement starts with Jones explaining that her home was broken into, which is why a strong stance on crime is important to her. It then states that Jones helped put 550 new police officers on the street in Las Vegas.

"If we're going to make Nevada a great place to live, we've got to make it a safe place to live," Jones said. "If you're afraid of being robbed or abused, then your quality of life is at stake."

Supporters of Jones say that she plans to continue running advertising on her main campaign issue of education.
