Qualifying opens for 35th Air Races

Jon Sharp of Lancaster, Calif., pushed Nemesis to 260 mph to set a qualifying mark in the Formula One class.
He was among 40 pilots who qualified on the first day of the 35th running of the planes. More qualifying is on tap today and Wednesday with races starting on Thursday and running through the weekend.
The fastest of the six classes, the Unlimiteds, also started qualifying with the popular P-51 Dago Red the fastest at nearly 444 mph around the nine-mile course at the Stead Airport.
It's being piloted this year by Bruce Lockwood of Mojave, Calif.
No serious incidents have been reported so far and skies are clear. Calm winds are expected to begin picking by the weekend.
