Rezoning lets schools expand

The Las Vegas City Council has unanimously approved the rezoning of three large land parcels so the Clark County School District can expand three elementary schools to meet the valley's booming growth.

The council approved the three separate measures to change the zoning from single-family residential to civic for two of the properties and from residence estates to civic for the other parcel.

The schools that now will be able expand are Ira J. Earl Elementary at Monroe Avenue and Marion Drive, Ronzone Elementary at Winwood Street and Stacey Avenue and Oran K. Gragson Elementary at 550 Honolulu Street.

School officials estimate that the construction will be completed in time for the start of the next school year.

The school district plans to build 8,091-square-foot, 18-foot-tall buildings at the Earl and Ronzone schools. The addition to the Earl school will be on the northwest corner of Monroe and Marion. The addition to the Ronzone school will be on the southeast corner of Winwood and Stacey.

The school district plans to build an 8,748-square-foot, 18-foot-tall addition to the Gragson school along Honolulu Street.

The buildings will be built on sites ranging from 8.3 acres to 9.68 acres and each will contain seven classrooms, the school district said. Parking will not be increased at any of the schools.

There were no public protests to the projects.
