Circus Circus to pick up bulk of tab for beautifying section of Strip

The section runs from Hacienda Avenue to Russell Road, in front of the company's new Mandalay Bay megaresort.

Owners of small properties on the opposite side of the Strip had complained that a county proposal would cost them $880 per frontage foot. The owners complained they couldn't afford the cost.

Circus Circus has proposed to do the beautification project itself for $2.8 million, about $1.45 million less than the county had planned to spend.

Company officials contend they can do the project at lower cost, and can have it ready when Mandalay Bay is scheduled to open March 1, 1999. Under the county's cumbersome bidding and design process, work on the project would not have started until next summer.

The company must still get final approval from the county and the state Department of Transportation.
