Columnist Peter Benton: Boy Scout event at Stallion Mt.

COMING UP WEDNESDAY, Oct. 7, at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club is the eighth annual Boy Scout Invitational Golf Tournament.

The event, which will be played over the north and south courses, will be limited to 200 players and has an entrance fee of $375. Play will begin at 1 p.m. following a barbecue lunch.

There will be longest drive and closest-to-the pin competitions, along with a trip for four to the 1999 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, in the event of a hole in one. Complimentary on-course beverages will be provided and an awards party will be held at the conclusion of play.

Since 1944 the Boulder Dam Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America has aided in the improvement of youth life in Clark County, Mohave County and the Colorado River communities.

LVI volunteers

The Las Vegas Invitational, scheduled Oct. 14-18 at the TPC Summerlin, the Desert Inn and the Las Vegas country clubs, is seeking volunteers to assist with their tournament.

Scorekeepers, gallery control personnel and greens reporters are required for this prestigious $2 million event.

Full training will be given to all volunteers. Short, hat and socks will be provided, along with a daily Continental breakfast and lunch and a party following the tournament.

Locals need to cash

There are but six PGA tournaments left before the "Silly Season" commences, and three touring professionals from the Las Vegas area have some serious work ahead of them.

Locals Robert Gamez and Craig Barlow, along with transplanted New Zealander Phil Tataurangi, all need to make some big money in the remaining events to retain their Tour cards for the 1999 season.

As only the top 125 players on the official money list are exempt for next year, and with the projected earnings for these 125 being a minimum of approximately $185,000, our representatives have their work cut out.

Gamez is in 198th place on the money list with $61,237; Barlow is 179th with $94,548 and Tataurangi is 171st with $110,701.
