Guns confiscated near high school

Clark County School District Police have confiscated two guns in two days near the Rancho High School campus, authorities said.

A 27-year-old man was cited by school police about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday after being accused of carrying a loaded weapon in his car -- an ordinance violation in North Las Vegas.

The officer had stopped the man's car on Owens Avenue near the high school for expired tags when the driver advised him of the 9mm semiautomatic, said Ray Willis, school district spokesman.

The driver's name was not released.

On Monday, police recovered a loaded .22-caliber handgun they claim a 17-year-old Jefferson Opportunity School student was carrying. An officer ran the license plate on a car the teen was seen in about 1:30 p.m. and discovered it was stolen, authorities said.

When questioned, the boy attempted to run off and allegedly tossed the gun over a wall. Police recovered the gun and arrested the 11th grader near Rancho High, later identifying him as having ties to a local gang.
