* 'MARDI GRAS, WITH A TWIST' -- The National Association of Women in Construction presents their Annual Scholarship Fund Raiser at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Las Vegas Country Club. This year's event is "Mardi Gras, with a Twist," a '50s hop. Currently, the organization has six Las Vegas area students that receive scholarships to study in their chosen field. * BACHELOR AUCTION -- The Arthritis Foundation will host its 12th annual Bachelor Auction Saturday at the Alexis Park Resort. Women have the opportunity to bid on 30 of the city's most eligible bachelors accompanied by upscale date packages. "Meet-the-bachelors hour" begins at 7 p.m. with a no host bar, complimentary hors d'oeuvres, silent auction and the opportunity to win fabulous prizes. * LUNCHEON & FASHION SHOW -- The Alzheimer's Association's annual luncheon and fashion show will be Sept. 24 at Bally's Las Vegas. David Cordoza of Neiman Marcus will present a runway fashion show featuring "The Art of Fashion." Maureen Reagan and Tova Borgnine will host the event and John Daly will be the master of ceremonies. All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer's Association of Southern Nevada. Tickets are $75 or $650 for a table of 10. For reserved seats, call 248-2770.

* LUCK OF THE DRAW -- The Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art will preview 61 pieces of original art created at NICA's invitation by contemporary artists on the theme of "Luck of the Draw." The evening, celebrating the finest in culinary arts, wines, performance and visual arts will begin 6 p.m. Friday at the Arts Factory, 107 E. * INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL -- KNPR 89.5-FM Nevada Public Radio will be the recipient of proceeds from the gala opening of the Las Vegas International Film Festival today at the Orleans hotel-casino. The 90-minute British documentary "Mob Law: A Film Portrait of Oscar Goodman, Las Vegas Attorney" is the evening's featured film.

* LUNCHEON/FASHION SHOW -- Michele Berk, the reigning Mrs. United States 1998-1999 will be showing her support of the Southern Nevada chapter of the Alzheimer's Association by joining local supporters, personalities and dignitaries for the annual Luncheon and Fashion Show Sept. 24 at Bally's hotel-casino. Getting results

* GOLF MARATHON -- Golfers at the Las Vegas Pauite Resort raised $86,788 for the Boy Scouts from the more than 650 contributors who sponsored the golfers for each hole of golf they played. Money earned from the golf marathon -- played from sunrise to sunset -- will benefit more than 25,000 scouting members of the Boulder Dam Area Council.

* CULTURE SHOCK -- Culture Shock Las Vegas, held its second annual song and dance production "Takin It To The Streets," -- to sold-out performances -- recently at Palo Verde High School. The production, to benefit Culture Shock's Future Shock Youth Outreach Program, raised $8,000, to be used to help steer youth away from drugs, violence and hatred and introduce them into a lifestyle that promotes acceptance, achievement, health and self-confidence. The four-year organization uses the powerful medium of street dance to reach out to young people. Culture Shock Las Vegas was the 1997 recipient of the Young Variety Award for its outstanding efforts on behalf of special children in Las Vegas.

* YOUNGSTERS WISHES FULFILLED -- Aladdin Gaming LLC recently presented the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada with a check for $81,024.14 from the Aladdin's Implosion Party. A live auction, which preceded the implosion of the Aladdin, has so far helped grant the wishes of six area children. Kylie, 3, traveled with her family to a Texas farm to visit her grandpa and other family members; Robert, 15, was transported by limousine to Planet Hollywood, where he and his family and friends were treated to dinner and Robert received a laptop computer. The group later visited Arizona Charlie's to see a boxing match and Robert received an autographed boxing glove; Luke, 5, Jose, 8 and Alexandria, 4, all had their wishes of traveling to Walt Disney World with families fulfilled; and Mallory, 10 received the computer she always wanted. Aladdin Gaming LLC will soon break ground for a new $1.3-billion development that will include two hotels, two casinos, high-end retail, entertainment and restaurants.

* WALK FOR THE CURE -- The Las Vegas Walk for the Cure, to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation will begin 8 a.m. Saturday at UNLV's Judy Bayley Theatre. Registration begins at 7 a.m. Funds are raised as walkers ask friends, relatives and co-workers to sponsor them for participating in the 10k walk-a-thon. Companies can also contribute through corporate sponsorship and through selling "paper sneakers" for $1. For more information or to participate, call Colleen Ashworth, 732-4795.

Honors

* SENIOR FRIENDS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR -- Bob Girard, a three-year member and volunteer of the Las Vegas Sunrise Senior Friends chapter, was selected from applicants nationwide as the 1998 Senior Friends Volunteer of the Year. Senior Friends, a not-for-profit association, provides health, social and wellness services to more than 11,000 seniors in the Las Vegas area, and to more than 330,000 seniors in 240 chapters nationwide. Anyone 50 years or older may join. Girard volunteers at the Sunrise Senior Friends reception desk five to 10 hours a week. Additionally, he is volunteer president and conducts monthly volunteer meetings, writes for the Sunrise chapter newsletter and is a member of the community advisory board. He also serves as treasurer for Champions of Organ Sharing which is affiliated with the Nevada Donor Network. Girard will receive a seven-day Caribbean cruise. * CLASSROOM ON WHEELS -- Nevada's Classroom on Wheels (COW) is one of 25 finalists vying for 10 Innovations in American Government Awards given by the Ford Foundation and Harvard University. Since 1992, black and white COW buses have brought preschool to over 2,000 Nevada kids who are eligible for Head Start but cannot access its services. The national award carries a grant totaling tens of thousands of dollars, and the final decision will be made in October by a panel of retired elected officials, business leaders and journalists.

* ADA 1998-99 BOARD MEMBERS -- The American Diabetes Association has elected Diane Fearon, president of the Las Vegas chapter. Fearon has been an active member on the board of directors for several years. Other board members include Janet Fisher, first vice president; Laurel Davis, vice president of fund development; Tim Sands, vice president of programs; Cathy Hayes, vice president of public relations/fund development; Johnny Gunn, vice president of public relations/programs; and Pat Czajkowski, secretary.

* LEARN TO COPE WITH CANCER -- The American Cancer Society is offering "I Can Cope," an eight-week series of free classes about cancer every Thursday from 6-8 p.m. beginning Sept. 24 at Mountain View Hospital, 3100 N. Tenaya Way. Facilitators will include doctors, nurses, social workers, and other professionals in the medical industry. To register, call 798-6877.

* FREE CHOLESTEROL SCREENINGS -- UMC's Sunset Quick Care, 525 Marks St., Henderson will offer free cholesterol screenings for area residents 50 years or over from 8:15 a.m.-9:45 a.m. Sept. 23. This screening is offered through UMC's Silver Advantage Program. Participants may eat a light breakfast and may take their medication. Call 383-2095 for make an appointment.

* AARP WORKSHOP -- Secretary of State Dean Heller has announced his support for the continuation of the American Association for Retired Person's Women's Financial Information Program in Las Vegas. The Securities Division of the secretary of state's office will sponsor the program now in its fifth year. The program's previous sponsor was the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. This year's workshops will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 10, 17 and 24 and Nov. 7 and 14. at Cannon Senior Services Center, 340 N. 11th St. Participants must register by Oct. 5. The cost is $15. * FREE KIDS MEALS -- Nevada Department of Education officials are advising parents that meal arrangements can be made for children who go hungry during year-round school vacation breaks. To find out where your child can receive a free meal, call (702) 687-9153 for the nearest site. Organizations that would like to help feed needy children in the Summer Food Service Program are encouraged to do so. * JWV POST 30 -- Jewish War Veterans Post 30 meets 9:30 a.m. Sunday for breakfast snacks at Sunrise Mountain View Hospital, Tenaya Way and Cheyenne Ave. The meeting starts at 10 a.m. Post 30 was organized to honor longtime Las Vegas leader, and founder and publisher of the Las Vegas Sun, the late Major Hank Greenspun.
