Dog rescued after tumble into mine shaft

But instead of Alice, it was Kabook the Malamute who was running after the rabbit. And Kabook's destination wasn't the rabbit's hole. It was one left by a long-forgotten miner.

Douglas County Search and Rescue team members were called out Wednesday morning to extricate the dog from a 30-foot mine shaft in the Pine Nut Mountains just east of here.

The effort was successful and Kabook is no worse for the wear.

"Not a scratch on him," owner Tom Ward said.

Whether he learned his lesson remains to be seen.

"Kabook's not the sharpest knife in the drawer," his owner conceded.
