Man killed in robbery

A 21-year-old man, who was robbed at gunpoint along with his father, was run over and intentionally killed by the robbers' getaway car as the young man attempted to escape, police said.

The victim and his father had been in the 200 block of West Philadelphia Avenue about 10:45 p.m. Thursday when they were robbed by two men in a black newer model Ford Thunderbird.

During the robbery, the victim tried to get away by running west on Philadelphia.

Homicide Lt. Wayne Petersen said the suspects got back into their car and, according to witnesses, intentionally ran the man over.

The vehicle drove west to the end of the block, made a U-turn and then fled east on Philadelphia to southbound Fairfield Avenue.

Paramedics took the man to University Medical Center where he died from his injuries. His identity has been withheld until relatives are notified.

The Thunderbird's driver is described as black, in his 20s with a short Afro hair cut and wearing a red T-shirt.

The passenger is described as white, in his 20s with blondish hair and also wearing a red T-shirt and possibly black shorts or black pants.

Police are investigating the possibility that the suspects are the same robbers who held up a citizen at Oakey Boulevard and Duneville Street about 15 minutes before the Philadelphia Avenue incident.
