Police review process progresses

An ordinance being prepared to create a citizen's review board for investigating allegations of police misconduct enters its final draft stage this Saturday during an all-day meeting.

The 16-member advisory committee will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Clark County Government Center, 500 Grand Central Parkway. Members anticipate the gathering to be the most pivotal since they began work back in February because a finalized document should be generated by meeting's end.

The committee's goal since being formed in December has been to establish guidelines for the proposed review board, which would feature 25 members and serve as an advisory panel to Metro Police in examining allegations of officer misconduct.

Committee members include representatives of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the American Civil Liberties Union, UNLV's criminal justice department, the district attorney's office, Metro Police, the Police Protective Association and the U.S. public defender.

Once the draft is deemed complete, the finished product goes next to city, county and fiscal affairs officials for approval.

If approved, the City Council will appoint 12 citizens and the County Commission 13 citizens to fill the 25 seats. Both city and county share in funding Metro's budget.
