Weekend Update: Music, Theater, Etc.

Sass from brass -- The newly formed Las Vegas Brass Quintet will play classical, Dixie and Ragtime tunes 2 p.m. Sunday at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Walter Boenig plays trombone; Tom Nelson and Rocky Lomardo are on trumpet; Doug Beasley handles French horn duties; and Russell Garry plays tuba. On 'Holiday' -- Local guitarist/musical arranger Joe Lano will perform at 7:30 p.m. today at the Nicholas Horn Theatre in Community College of Southern Nevada's "Arrangers' Holiday III" concert. Lano, who has written and toured with Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne and Ann-Margret, performs with the 18-piece Dream Band III. He'll share the stage with renowned leader/conductor Kim Richmond and United States Army Band arranger Mark Taylor. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for students and seniors. Island sounds -- Hawaiian recording artist Keali'i Reichel will perform with his singers and dancers at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at the Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza in Lorenzi Park, 720 Twin Lakes Drive, as part of the Ho'olaule'a-Pacific Island Festival. Reichel's 1994 debut album, "Kawaipunahele," was the best selling recording in Hawaiian history. Concert tickets are $12 at the gate, which opens at 5 p.m.

Aloha -- Soak up the atmosphere of the Pacific Island Saturday and Sunday at the Ho'olaule'a '98-Pacific Islands Festival. Co-sponsored by the City of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club, the annual festival features entertainment, island crafts and boutiques, games, traditional dances and foods. Areas will be set aside for hands-on demonstrations. Admission to the festival, which takes place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Lorenzi Park, is free. Call 229-6704 for details.

Art in the parking lot -- Mark Vranesh Studio presents "Festival at the Lido," an outdoor fine arts and crafts show, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Lido Plaza shopping center, on the southwest corner of Rancho and Craig Roads. The festival will feature more than 50 artists and crafters from las Vegas, California and Arizona selling glass art, woodworking, ceramic and mixed media works. Admission is free. Life-saving lessons -- Three-hour CPR courses will be held throughout the day beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset mall. Courses are open to people ages 8 and older; pre-register by calling 565-2880. A personal safety fair will also take place at the mall, featuring self defense, bicycle safety and home security demonstrations.

Send in the dolls -- World famous doll designer Mel Odom, who created the Gene Marshall doll inspired by the legendary screen actress, will appear from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at FAO Schwarz at the Forum Shops. Odom's work has been exhibited in the Chrysler Museum and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
