Instead, they'll have to wait until 1999 due to delays stemming from concerns brought up by the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Ed Bavouset, the U.S. Postal Service employee overseeing the project, said the concerns have been worked out, and "hopefully, around Oct. 1 people will be seeing dirt fly."

The post office, on the south end of town, had an initial completion date of Dec. 1. Bavouset said the Postal Service's contract with the contractor, Ocean West, calls for a 180-day completion period once work begins.

"The contractor has indicated to us that he feels he can complete it in 120 days, which would put it at the end of January," said Bavouset. "It probably is, at this point in time, unrealistic to get in before this Christmas season, but if we can occupy it in the first couple months of the new year, the postmaster will be happy."

The Postal Service bought the 43,000-square-foot lot that will host the new office earlier this year. The decision was reached after a decade of fighting over possible sites, with many residents seeking a downtown location and postal officials pushing for a larger facility on the outskirts of town.
