Reno City Council to consider giving itself a pay raise

Council members currently receive $20,000 a year. The mayor's salary is $25,000 annually.

Under the proposal, council members' pay would go to $39,600, while the mayor's salary would increase to $49,500.

"The council felt the city would get better qualified people running for city offices with more money being offered," said City Attorney Patricia Lynch, who drafted the proposal.

Although the council and mayor positions theoretically are part time, all serve on various boards and commissions, making the office full time, Lynch said.

She told the Daily Sparks Tribune that she is also researching an amendment to automatically tie the salaries of Reno council members of that of Washoe County commissioners, who currently receive $39,600.
