Police outlast suspect

A man who held Metro Police at bay by threatening suicide surrendered without incident after 5 1/2 hours Monday and was taken to the Clark County Detention Center on charges of burglary and kidnapping.

Metro and SWAT units responded to the stand-off which took place at a northwest Las Vegas residence beginning at about 1 p.m. and ending around 7 p.m.

The unidentified man, believed to be between 25 and 35 years old, was surrounded by police in the backyard of a residence at 9333 Sienna Ridge Drive, near Peccole Ranch.

The man was pointing a gun at his head and threatening to kill himself. As a precaution police evacuated the four houses in the Sienna Ridge cul de sac, and blocked off Red Hills Road two blocks north and south of where it meets Sienna Ridge Drive.

Metro officer Steve Meriwether said that the suspect had allegedly held a man against his will for about two hours early Monday afternoon in the man's home on Astor Martin Drive.

When the man being held managed to escape, he ran across the street to a neighbor's home and called police. When police arrived the suspect had fled out a back window and made his way to the backyard on Sienna Ridge.

Meriwether said the man who had been held hostage told investigators he was out and when he returned home the suspect, the ex-husband of a woman he knew, was waiting for him.
