Tyson gets hospital choices

The doctors are in.

Mike Tyson's bid to regain his Nevada boxing license will be determined by an independent psychiatric investigation at one of three world renowned medical facilities -- Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Massachusetts General Hospital or Menninger Memorial Hospital in Topeka, Kan.

Those were the three three sites chosen by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, as per Saturday's instructions to Tyson at his relicensing hearing.

Tyson must undergo a examination and submit the results to the NSAC prior to next Monday. The commission will reconvene on Oct. 5, at which time it will vote on granting a license to the former heavyweight champion.

The NSAC revoked Tyson's license in July, 1997, following Tyson's rematch with Evander Holyfield. Tyson was disqualified for twice biting Holyfield's ears during the bout at the MGM Grand.

The commission decided at Saturday's marathon six-hour hearing at Cashman Field that Tyson and his camp had not done enough to prove the fighter's mental stability during his 14-month layoff.

Many observers consider the upcoming medical evaluation little more than a formality, and expect the commission to issue Tyson a license when it reconvenes. It is projected he could be fighting again as early as November, most likely at the MGM Grand.

The MGM provided transportation to and from Saturday's hearing for members of the Tyson entourage.
