Salmonella cause of illness

Forty-seven people were treated at hospitals in northern Nevada.

Salmonella is a food-borne illness associated with undercooked chicken, pork and eggs.

State health officials on Thursday said tests are being conducted on food samples to determine the exact source of the bacteria. Results are expected next week.

The bacteria causes nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever. Luana Ritch, state health division spokeswoman, said it can be life threatening to the very young and elderly.

The party was held last Saturday at the Eureka Opera House and was catered by a local hotel.
